Class 40.
The completion and launching in Wellington of the Farr designed Kiwi 40. Launching went perfectly despite the weather! This superb Class 40 is as good as it gets, it is 'Grand Prix' race boat down to every detail, and now we get to enjoy sailing the 'Bodacious Dream' in Wellington for the next month before she is exported to Chicago to begin her build up to the 2013 Global Ocean Race. We are proud to announce that when formally measured the boat was bang on maximum allowable righting moment and minimum displacement under the Class 40 rules. Congratulations to Dave Rearick and BT Boats.

Jet Black.
After 3 years a concept became a full size model and the beginning of a real campaign. Jet Black is a jet car, destined to challenge to be the worlds fastest car and hold the 'World Land Speed Record'. Richard Nowland began building his vision at Hakes Marine almost 3 years ago, during that time; the team, shape, design and challenge have all matured. Now this beautiful full size model will tour the country in a publicity and promotional campaign, show casing New Zealand's expertise in all aspects of engineering excellence, design, construction and campaign management. Hakes Marine are very proud of our continuing support and association with the Jet Black Team. Check out the website and video www.jetblack.co.nz

We are delighted to welcome BT Boats to Hakes Marine. It will be used as a show case of the latest Class 40 technology during the Global Ocean Race coming to Wellington in January. Hitting the water with style!

Following the successful launch of Oystercatcher XXVIII for Englishman Richard Matthews, the smiles just continued to get bigger from all involved as we put her through what must be the world's toughest sea trial. On her first sail Wellington switched on the wind machine with a constant 25 knots and gusts over 35 knots, yet Oystercatcher XXVIII came to life with some exhilarating downwind rides. Even fully loaded upwind she performed immaculately for her first outing. The debut race for this ocean flyer will be next years Key West Race Week in Florida US.

"Morrelli and Melvin designed high tech 10m catamaran starts production at Hakes Marine."
From carbon female moulds just completed, Hakes Marine will now start production of this ultra light weight high technology racing catamaran. She will be constructed from carbon prepreg and honeycomb cores, that will be cured at high temperatures in our new 80' telescopic oven. All moulds including the wave piercing hulls have been created from our 6m CNC router to ensure complete dimensional accuracy. The level of detailed design and weight saving solutions will be very high ensuring this is one of the fastest and lightest boats on the water for its length.

We are now in the final 8 week countdown to launching this fabulous new IRC optimised Ocean Racer for a UK client. Haspa Hamburg GER6300 launched!

The 15th December was the scheduled launch date for Haspa Hamburg GER6300. This state of the art racing yacht designed by the renowned Judel Vrolijk Design house is another on time and on budget Hakes Marine success. This fantastic looking yacht is destined for the HVS Sailing Club in Hamburg and is especially designed as a Youth Training Yacht. She will be raced hard by the club's youth across the Atlantic, Baltic and Nothern Seas.

Haspa Hamburg will spend January sailing around Wellington with the Youths over from Germany especially; racing against the local competition. At the end of January we shall sail her to Auckland to be packed up and shipped to Hamburg. As always we wish her and her crew the very best of success, and safe sailing.

We hope this design will have a wider appeal as a performance cruising boat too which it would be perfectly adaptable for. With small modifications to lengthen the cabin top and the addition of a master and guest cabin she will be a roomy and very fast and comfortable blue water cruiser / racer.

What's Coming?

Keep watching this space for another exciting project due to be unveiled soon. Here's a clue...

Dee Caffari out to set another new record:

Dee has successfully brought her IMOCA 60 around the world nursing a shredded mainsail from Cape Horn to finish the 2009 Vendee Globe in 6th place. Completing one of the toughest Vendee races seen in many years due to some heinous weather, she has the honour of having a World Record for the first woman to circumnavigate the globe non stop in both directions... stunning effort! Not content to idly bask in her record breaking glory, she is currently readying the good ship 'Aviva' once more to challenge the speed record for around Britain with an all women crew. "Good on ya Dee; good luck and go for it"

New Factory

We are now enjoying the beginning of our third month in our new 2500sqm facility. It could not have been a better move and the new factory is working out better than we could have expected and hoped for. Currently we are enjoying a very busy period with our component and refit work keeping our diligent staff at capacity. We look forward to next month when we start a new yacht construction for export. Watch for details when work begins in 5 weeks for what will be a great yacht.

2009 a New Year and a New Factory

We are very pleased to announce that as from mid January 2009 Hakes Marine will be operating from its new facility. A first for Wellington as the new yard is directly opposite the travel lift at Seaview Marina giving Hakes Marine's clients the ability to have their yachts lifted directly from the sea and into our yard. Our new place boasts more space, a better and more efficient layout, project management offices and secured stores and all the trimmings associated with a modern composite yacht manufacturing facility. Update to follow with pictures soon.

2008 Sydney Hobart

Congratulations are in order for Graeme Wood and the crew of WOT NOW. WOT NOW is a TP52 that we built in 2006 for the Mediterranean circuit. Since then Graeme has purchased the boat and engaged Hakes Marine to convert her into a Sydney Hobart racer. It was an extensive refit including many safety and performance enhancing modifications.

In addition to their envious podium finish they won the Rolex Trophey 2008 in Sydney as part of the Sydney Hobart Race build up, roll on 2009 for this talented crew and their fast 52' Round the Bouys / Ocean Racer WOT NOW.

Vendee Globe

Now with over half the fleet retired with either broken boats, or worse bones, the fleet is past the halfway point and are rounding Cape Horn. Unfortunately Mike Golding with ECOVER 3 has been dismasted after leading the race for a brief 6 hours down in the Southern Ocean. He along with others have made safe shores in Freemantle Australia. In the meantime Dee Caffari sailing AVIVA is still going well, she has had her fair share of hard times and is currently nursing her mainsail to finish the race, current position is 9th.

Hakes Marine is watching the Vendee Globe

The crew at Hakes Marine is watching daily how Mike Golding in Ecover 3 and Dee Caffari in Aviva are progressing in the Vendee Globe.

These are awesomely powerful machines in such an incredible race so check out their progress on the following link and see the latest videos:

Hakes Marine supports its customers
on a global scale

Hakes Marine has been supporting customers all over the globe with SWOT teams (skilled workers on tour) working in The United States, Australia, Europe and Ireland.

In San Francisco two SWOT Teams were dispatched; one for the new owner of R/P45 Beau Geste now renamed Criminal Mischief required a steering conversion and the addition of a kelp cutter. After the job was completed Criminal Mischief made her intentions quite clear with a win the IRC division of St Francis Yacht Club's Stone Cup.

We wish the new owner, Chip Megeath all the best for the upcoming 2008 Pacific Cup.

At same the time another SWOT team was dispatched to the other side of the bay to carry out a repair to Cheyenne (formally Playstation) for Marathon Racing.

Across the ditch in Australia teams were rotated for several weeks to complete the conversion of former TP52 Glory now renamed Wot Now. This IRC conversion involved a new bowsprit, bulb, and structural strengthening and changes throughout. She is now an IRC weapon, we will see how Graeme Wood and his crew will campaign her in the up and coming Sydney/Southport & Audi Sydney Gold Coast Race and later in the year with the Rolex Sydney/Hobart.

Paul Hakes took a week out at the start of the TP52 season and visited the Silver Surfer crew for their debut Mediterranean regatta in Alicante, making sure the boat was 100% and the crew are able to dedicate all their time to tuning the rig and sails.

In Ireland another SWOT team is helping with Ger O'Rourke's newly acquired VO70 (formally ABN AMRO 1) in preparation for this years V70 battle around the globe.

Presently yet another small but dedicated SWOT team are preparing for a Japanese invasion. We are arming ourselves with another prepreg carbon bow sprit and the team will be heading off to Japan in September to fit this to a Vande Stadt 47'.

Despite being tucked away in Wellington, New Zealand, Hakes Marine is showing that the modern world is truly a small place..

TP52 - 'AUDI Q8' launched

Wow! The SILVER SURFER is born.

Congratulations to Riccardo Simoneschi who christened his new TP52 last week.

The Audi Sailing Team arrived here in Wellington to take her out for her maiden sail. Wellington once again switched on the sun and wind which saw the Silver Surfer living up to her name and reaching across the harbour at 18 knots. Upwind she was powered up, beautifully balanced and a joy to sail in wind gusts up to 25 knots. After two days sailing and a faultless performance from both the boat and the rig everything was ticked off and she was packed up to be shipped to Europe. The Silver Surfer will be displayed on the Genoa City waterfront along side a two day rock concert before the Audi Sailing Team buckle down to business and compete in the prestigious Audi Med Cup along side the worlds most professional crews and over 20 TP52s.

Our best wishes for success from the Hakes Marine Team go to Riccardo and his crew.

Open 60 - 'AVIVA'

On 13th December 2007 three days ahead of schedule the Open 60 Aviva for Dee Caffari left the yard in Seaview to take up residence in Chaffers Marina. Over the next month after all the systems were successfully commissioned Dee and her team were able to carry out the sea trials both in Wellington Harbour and the Cook Strait. After only losing two days to bad weather and a successful 180 roll test Aviva was packed up and trucked to Tauranga to begin her six week sea voyage to Portugal where she will race against her sistership Ecover 3.

The team at Hakes Marine Ltd wishes Dee all the best for the Vendee Globe this year.

Dee Caffari sailing AVIVA

Quote from Dee Caafari:
"In the world of Cutting edge technology and Open 60 designs, finishing a build on time is almost unheard of. Hakes Marine not only delivered on time but with a great finish too. My project team found the yard a pleasure to work with and were pleased with the support throughout the sailing trials that followed the launch in the home waters of Wellington Harbour."

IRC45 - 'Sjambok'

Paul and the team at Hakes Marine Limited wish to congratulate Michael Brennan and the crew of 'Sjambok' for winning the 2007 Gulf Stream Series. The annual US-IRC Gulf Stream Series which starts in January and finishes in November, offers a comprehensive racing opportunity for sailors entering the major IRC events in the Caribbean and on the East Coast.

TP52 - 'Silver Surfer'

Hakes Marine is pleased to announce the build of the new TP52 'Silver Surfer' due to be launched in March 2008. This exciting project is underway for a repeat customer Riccardo Simoneschi who only two years ago had a new TP52 out of the shed at Hakes Marine. Designed by Judel-Vrolijk he is after something a bit lighter, a bit stiffer and a bit faster!

Open 60 - 'Ecover 3'

After 7 months and over 28 thousand man hours 'Ecover 3' hit the waters of the WaitemataHarbour with a splash as she was put through her 180degree self righting roll test. Everyone at Hakes Marine is extremely proud of their achievements and proud to have been part of Mike Golding's build up to the 2008 Vendee Globe Yacht Race. Congratulations Mike, and the team at Hakes Marine look forward to following an exciting campaign.

TransPac 52

Congratulations to the three Hakes Marine TP52s. The Trans Pac 52s started this years season with a tune-up regatta in Hublot Palmavela. After a great regatta, first went to Peter de Ridder again proving that 'Mean Machine' will be a very tough customer this season. Third spot went to 'AnonimoQ8' owned and sailed by Riccardo Simoneschi. Seventh went to John Buchan with his brand new 'Glory' launched earlier this year. A promising and strong start to the season which could see Hakes Marine boats taking all spots on the podium!

IRC 45

Congratulations to the two new Reichel Pugh designed IRC45s. These new boats are proving what rocket ships they really are with both boats winning their recent regattas. Firstly 'Sjambok' owned by Michael Brennan won the Jamaica Regatta on IRC, taking out the Pineapple Cup with an impressive 24hour run of 387 nautical miles. Then Karl Kwok owner of the new 'Beau Geste' won the Sydney Southport regatta on IRC, the crew reporting a top speed of 31 knots!
